GENERAL INFORMATION
Type of Request: Training and orientation for new Planning Commission members.
ANALYSIS
Background: Three new members are joining the Planning Commission in January. An
orientation and training session will be held to welcome the new members to
the Commission. The session also provides an opportunity for existing
members to share their insight and to be reminded of their role as Planning
Commissioners.
The topics to be covered include the following:
Introductions
Role of the Planning Commission and Commissioners
Legal basis for decision - making
Ethics and conflicts of interest
How the Commission operates — general process, agenda format, public
hearings
What is a CUP, variance, PUD, rezoning, ordinance amendment, etc.
Explanation of City review process
Overview of current City projects
Upcoming items
Not all topics relevant to being a Planning Commissioner can be covered in
one orientation session. Additional study sessions will be held throughout
the. year on specific topics such as tax increment financing.
The new members are Donna Drummond, John Bjostad and Gordon Hanson.
