CITY OF RICHFIELD
PLAd'INING COMMISSION AGENDA
Item #3
Case: None
Originating Department: City Manager
Action Requested: Purchase of land for public purposes
Exhibits: Report and maps showing location of property proposed for acquisition
will be presented at the June 27 meeting.
Several years ago, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) purchased several parcels
of land within the New Fordtown area of the city from the state as tax delinquent
property. These purchases were thought desirable by the Commission, as an inhibitor
to families desiring to move into the area. The actions of MAC resulted in a large
controversy between city officials and airport officials several years ago. The end
result was that;the City was successful in preventing MAC from buying up all of
NF-w Fordtown.
Several years have passed since these events, and now MAC is desirous of having the
city purchase back this property, for use in whatever public improvement projects the
city deems advisable for this area. The City Staff is encouraging the purchase to
assist it in completing certain open space park, public Street, and storm sewer projects
in the New Fordtown area.
It is not known at this time the exact amount that the City will have to expend for
this land, but the intent is not to pay any more than MAC has invested in this property.
The City Attorney was preparing a report for consideration in connection with this
item at the time that the agenda was being prepared. This report will be made
available to the Commission at the June 27, 1972 Planning Commission meeting.
As the offiqial planning agency of the city, the Planning Commission must approve
all purchases of land, which will be used for public purposes within the city.
The Commission should therefore, evaluate this proposal, once full information has
been provided, and recommend approval or denial of the project to the City
Council.
