2021-07 CSCRICHFIELD COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION DRAFT MINUTES UNTIL APPROVED BY THE CSC.REGULAR COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING Tuesday, July 20, 2021 Municipal Center (Heredia Room) PRESENT CSC: Ralston Sacco, Brooke Nelson, Stephanie Nwaudo, Lisa Rudolph, Meredith Bruzek, Kevin Wendt, David Benson STAFF: Amy Markle (Recreation Director), John Evans (Secretary) COUNCIL: Ben Whalen OTHERS: Dr. Simone French (U of M) ABSENT CSC: Joseph Miller, Jenna Hanson, Mejbah Ahmed, Heather MacDonald <OTHERS: Crystal Brakke (school board) Call to Order/Approval of Agenda & Minutes Chair Wendt called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm. This meeting’s agenda and the minutes of the 6/15/21 regular meeting were approved by consensus. Staff Reports Recreation Services: Recreation Services Director Markle reported on the following: Lil Sparkler 4th of July event was a success Augsburg Adventure Park will open with a ceremony on Thursday, July 22 Urban Wildland Half Marathon & 5K coming up July 30/31 Penn Fest coming up Saturday, September 19 Fall brochure is being assembled now. 77th Street Underpass Project begins this week Outdoor Pool and Arena have been very busy Farmers Market is seeing record numbers of visitors Talked with City Manager about the comment from the June meeting about acknowledging indigenous people in the parks. The City Manager suggested handing that project to the Equity Coordinator. Round-Up Program is currently benefiting all-terrain wheelchairs at Wood Lake. The Round-Up Program benefactor will switch for a while to raise money for a pollinator garden at Augsburg Park, then switch back to the wheelchair fundraiser at the end of the year. Discussion Items Neighborhood Park Youth Sports Program Fee Waiver & Intensive Family Outreach Dr. Simone French, U of MN Professor, talked about a public-health initiative to partner with local parks and recreation agencies to provide low- and no-cost recreational opportunities for youth to overcome financial, language, and cultural barriers. She said that the program is recruiting families with kids ages six to 12 to collect information about their participation in the program. She invited the CSC to provide feedback related to how existing programs are conducted and if the program would be a good fit with Richfield’s existing recreation programs. Amy suggested possibly including Wood Lake Nature Center’s programming. Action Items Cancellation of August Meeting The group agreed, by consensus, to cancel the regular August meeting.
