2000-05 CSC RICHFIELD COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, May 9, 2000 Wood Lake Nature Center Present: Commissioners Arnie Auchstetter, Linda Slocum, Chad Sharkey, Rick Jabs, John Enger, Maureen Scaglia, Tim Erlander, Jake Sedlacek, Bob Dietl Staff John Evans, Jim Topitzhofer, Steve Devich, John Thom Council Liaison Susan Rosenberg School Liaison Others Absent: Commissioners John Easterwood, Allen Yun Council Liaison School Liaison Jim Sloss Call to Order The meeting was called to order by CSC Acting Chair Erlander at 7:01 p.m. Approval of Minutes Sharkey moved, seconded by Auchstetter, to approve the minutes of the April 11 regular meeting. Approved, ayes all. Staff Reports Recreation Services Recreation Services Director Topitzhofer reported the following: The dance recital and Cinco de Mayo were held the previous weekend. The Community Gardens are roughly 60% booked. The Wood Lake trail raising project will soon be done with the construction of the top dressing and the construction of bridges. The skatepark idea is still going strong. The park would be built in Adams Hill Park with the Cities of Edina and Bloomington and operated by the YMCA. A grand opening was held for the refurbished ballfields. The Senior Variety Show and the Friends concert (benefit for the Fourth of July Committee) are coming up soon. Enterprise Funds Administrative Services Director Devich reported the following: Ice Arena The arena is enjoying good rentals. Outdoor Pool Staff is gearing up for the 2000 season. Adventure Gardens Mini-Golf The mini-golf course opened last weekend and enjoyed pretty good business. The re-carpeting is expected to cost about $8,000. Discussion Items Drinking Water Quality Report Utility Coordinator Thom shared the water quality report, which indicates that the quality of Richfield water is considered extremely high. Thom said that the report, mailed out to all water consumers, stresses water conservation and water quality. Neighborhood Park Meeting Report Topitzhofer provided a summary of the neighborhood park meetings, held at most Richfield parks on April 22 and 29. CSC members mentioned the Adopt-A-Park Project, which Richfield once had. Little Bob’s Park Neighborhood Meeting Topitzhofer suggested a meeting with neighbors of Little Bob’s Park regarding the replacement of their play equipment (or other possible options). Topitzhofer said that the new development will not include children’s play equipment. By consenus, the CSC recommended a neighborhood meeting and the pursuit of funding from developers working in the area. Fairwood/Monroe Park Neighborhood Meeting Topitzhofer said that a neighborhood meeting will be held regarding the construction of an open-sided shelters in both parks. Enger suggested using one of the shelters from the golf course. Sedlacek and Jabs said that input from the neighbors would be crucial. Committee Reports Outdoor Pool Task Force Topitzhofer provided the OPTF report. He said that the OPTF would be reviewing some defined options for the Outdoor Pool at the next meeting. The June CSC meeting will be a joint meeting with the OPTF. Community Center Sub-Committee Jabs said that the CCSC met with staff to discuss options for the building; the CCSC will meet with user groups as well; next meeting is June 1. FOWL Dietl gave the FOWL report; said that over 200 people attended the FOWL Dinner on April 28; the Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration would be held on Sunday, June 4.
