2017-05 Friendship City MinutesRichfield  Friendship  City  Commission,  Meeting  Minutes  –  May  18,  2017     The  meeting  was  called  to  order  at  7:01  by  Marty  Kirsch,  Vice  Chair.   Those  in  attendance:    Dave  Delzer,  JoAnn  Boraas,  Pixie  Pixler,  Marty  Kirsch,  Rori   Coleman-­‐Woods,  Mary  Olafson,  Sharon  Amegee,  Hadiya  Bakar,  Cynthy  Mandl   (RFCC  Ambassador),  Jim  Topitzhofer  (Staff  Liasion),  Roger  Swanson  (guest)   Absent,  excused:    Ahmad  Ansari,  Darwin  Schaeferlane  (Community  Services   Commission  liaison),  Karen  Schragg  (Staff  Liaison)   Approval  of  Minutes:    Minutes  from  the  April  20,  2017,  meeting  were  approved   as  drafted.   Treasurer’s  Report:    Checking  account  balance  as  of  April  28,  2017,  was  $3407.52,   with  $0.13  interest  earned  in  April.    Report  accepted   Old  Business:    Heredia  Park  Sculpture  Report  –  The  sculpture  was  installed  May   16,  2017,  and  the  descriptive  plaque  with  the  sculptor’s  poem  has  been  ordered,   per  Jim.        Display  Cabinet  in  City  Hall  -­‐    Cynthy,  Dave  &  JoAnn  will  make  arrangements   to  convert  the  display  cabinet  used  by  the  RFCC  to  feature  works  by  Guillermo   Hernandez,  the  sculptor  visiting  from  Costa  Rica.    Cynthy  has  several  items  as   does  the  City.    Sculpture  Dedication  Ceremony  -­‐  Mary  and  Jim  reported  that  the   ceremony,  set  for  Saturday,  June  24,  2:00-­‐4:00,  will  be  posted  on  Facebook,  the   City  of  Richfield  website,  and  Jim  will  see  that  other  council  members  and  the   new  media  coordinator  are  aware  of  the  ceremony  and  are  invited  to  attend.     Mary  will  arrange  for  a  cake  (likely  from  Costco),  coffee,  bottled  water  and  an   additional  bottled  beverage,  as  well  as  plates,  cups,  etc.,  and  plan  for  150  guests.     Mary  is  to  forward  the  food  receipts  and  invoice  from  the  sculptor’s  plane  ticket   to  Jim  for  reimbursement  of  $500  from  the  City.       Our  student  members,  Sharon  and  Hadiya,  agreed  to  act  as  greeters  for   those  who  attend  the  event,  and  they  will  also  direct  guests  to  the  correct  rooms.     Refreshments  will  likely  be  served  in  the  Bartholomew  Room,  and  an  art  display   may  be  placed  in  the  Heredia  Room.    The  program  proposed  by  Mary  includes  an   introduction  of  the  RFCC  by  the  Master/Mistress  of  Ceremonies  (Rori),  description   of  the  connection  between  Richfield  and  Heredia  (Ahmad),  and  story  of  the   sculpture  (Cynthy  and  Jim).    Other  components  may  include  students  from  the   dual  language  school  presenting  artwork  to  the  sculptor,  and  also  singing  a  song   for  the  ceremony.    Rori  has  contacted  the  Richfield  Soccer  Association  and  is   waiting  to  hear  of  any  participation  they  may  have.    Guillermo  and  the  young   soccer  player,  Sofia,  upon  whom  the  sculpture’s  features  are  based,  would  then   “unveil”  the  sculpture  at  2:30.        Unity  in  the  Community  –  Jim  reported  that  this  event,  to  be  held  at   Veterans  Park  on  May  25,  does  not  include  community  groups  this  year,  but  does   include  groups  that  represent  diversity  in  the  community.    RFCC  was  invited  and   will  have  a  table  at  the  event.    Rori  will  send  an  updated  version  of  the  RFCC   pamphlet  to  Jim  by  Monday,  May  22,  for  distribution  at  the  event,  and  Mary  will   see  that  invitations  to  the  sculpture  dedication  ceremony  are  available.    RFCC   members  who  will  participate  include  Marty,  Dave,  Cynthy,  JoAnn,  Rori  and  Pixie.       New  Business:    Logistics  for  Guillermo  Hernandez  –  Cynthy  reported  that   Guillermo  will  arrive  in  Richfield  Tuesday,  June  20,  following  a  brief  visit  to  family   in  Texas,  and  will  depart  Richfield  to  Costa  Rica  Tuesday,  June  27.    He  will  stay   with  Ken  and  Cynthy  during  his  week  in  Richfield.    Arrangements  will  be  made  for   him  to  visit  the  credit  union  in  order  to  be  reimbursed  for  the  cost  of  his  airline   ticket  (~$790).    Guillermo’s  son  intends  to  travel  from  Texas  to  attend  the   ceremony,  at  his  own  expense,  and  will  also  stay  with  the  Mandls.    JoAnn   proposed  looking  in  to  scheduling  Spanish  language  docent  tours  at  the   Minneapolis  Sculpture  Garden  and  Minneapolis  Institute  of  Arts.    Following  the   Saturday  afternoon  dedication  ceremony,  the  RFCC,  the  sculptor  and  his  son,  and   other  associated  guests  may  be  scheduled  for  a  group  dinner,  as  previously   suggested  by  Ahmad.    Cynthy  will  forward  photos  of  Guillermo’s  two  sculptures,   Aleanza  and  now  Sofia,  to  him  in  Costa  Rica  prior  to  his  travels,  as  preparation  for   any  repairs  or  touchups  he  may  want  to  provide  while  visiting.       Adjournment:    The  meeting  was  adjourned  by  Marty  Kirsch.
