City Council Presentation – On Tuesday November 13th Joyce will give a brief presentation about the
Arts Commissions activities this past year to the city council. There was a brief discussion of past years
activities including doing three family events at the Farmers Market this year, displaying multiple artists
at both city hall and the community center, helped judge the teen art show at the library and were
involved with several other events. Larry will send out pictures of the RAC events at the Farmers Market
from this past year
66th Street Project‐ The city will be installing 20 poetry panels in the first round. Requests for poetry
submissions will go out in early December with commission members helping get the word out by
approaching different community groups. The deadline for submissions will be February 14th with
selections to be made at our March meeting. Selected poems need to be given to the city by April 1st.
The panels in the first round will consist of 18 poems and 2 panels with special art work or symbols
which will be installed on the east end of 66th street between Cedar and Portland Avenues. Commission
members should come to the February meeting with ideas for those two panels.
In the first round there will be three different categories for submissions. Six will be over 18, six 14‐18
and 6 14 and under. There was also some discussion around including poems in other languages such as
Spanish. It was decided to look at ways at including other languages in the next rounds of poetry panels.
The commission is looking at doing a public event connected with the poetry installations sometime
near the end of June or early July
Mural Update‐ There was some discussion about when we select artist for the mural do we want to
select the Artist by the submission or do we want to go only off of the artists body of work. Commission
members well start checking with other cities like Bloomington that have done large mural projects also
it was suggested to talk to some artists to see that have done similar projects to see how they have
worked in the past.
Band shell‐ The commission is looking at ways for us to be involved with the Band shell once it is
completed. One suggestion would be Joyce using it for her youth group to put on her play about
Richfield. Joyce thought at least one day with possibly up to three would work. Marykaye will look at
available dates.
Standing Reports
Little Library‐ No major updates. Books are stored in Marykayes office and will be available if the Little
Library needs books. The plan is still to move the library to the garden next to the band shell in the
spring.
Artists Resource Group‐ Tom is looking to put together an artist art exchange for some time in
December. Some location ideas included the community center or more of a happy hour location like
Houlihan’s
Farmers Market Event‐The last Farmers Market event of the year was held on Saturday October 13th
Mia, Larry Marykaye and Mike from the rec staff all helped with the event. It was well attended and the
newly remodeled space seemed to work well for the event. There were lots of little kids “stuffing their
faces” with witches hat cupcakes.
Staff Report‐Marykaye
Currently both the art displays at city hall and the community center have artists lined up.
Mia and Marykaye will be looking into purchasing both a banner and sometime of covered tent that the
arts commission can use at events.
