Agenda approved. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve minutes. Minutes approved. Chase Bank Sculpture Still no word from Chase Bank on sculpture designs to vote on, but the space at 66th and Lyndale has been turned into a pocket park and landscaped and is prepped for the artwork. MaryKaye is working with Community Development to reach out to Chase as well to hopefully re-engage them in talks to get the sculpture requirement fulfilled in the near future. Richfield High School – Spring Senior Art Show Adam Miller ( mailto:adam.miller@rpsmn.orgadam.miller@rpsmn.org) attended the meeting. He is the Art Teacher at Richfield HS. He has an estimated 10+ seniors, and 2 who will study art post-secondary, who he would like to showcase in a local art show event. He is seeking RAC’s support of the project in terms of a location/date. It would be in April/May. The Community Center was proposed as a prime location to display the art (mostly hanging art) and also to host an opening event. Adam provided his email to contact with more info, once RAC has time to consider the event, which was met with praise during the meeting. Mississippi Poets Poetry Project Update – event recap The August event in Lyndale Gardens at Richfield Lake was a success with 7 poets present and all 10 poems read by the poets and other members of the poetry association. City Council was represented by Mary Supple who spoke, as did Amy Markle, Director of Parks and Recs, and our youth RAC member Hazel Bieganek. Karin will reach out to Annette and Cornerstone to send thank yous, as using the amphitheater was an incredible addition to the event. Many people, including the poets, didn’t know the lake or amphitheater was in Richfield, and were glad to be aware of its existence. MaryKaye will attempt to get ahold of some of the brochures created by Mississippi Poets that highlight all of the poems, so RAC has some available to hand out. The RAC and City logos were included in the brochure and on the signs. There were some concerns voiced about the location not being ADA accessible; however, MaryKaye discovered that amphitheater complied with all City ADA requirements at the time it was built, and there was a ramp available to the space. Crossroads Event Recap Joyce provided an overview of the event on Aug. 28th. It went well and she appreciated RAC’s support and volunteers. The event featured Kelley Kelley, a Brooklyn, NY musician with local ties, who assembled a band. RAC members brought up how previous events involved more kid performers from Crossroads, which will be revisited in future events and wasn’t as possible with COVID this past year to prepare. Could even consider alumni of Crossroads as performs as well. Lightning in the area ended the event a little earlier than planned, but most of the festivities had already occurred. The Mayor made an appearance at the end of the event to recognize the important role that non-profits play in the community. Pride Circle The roundabout near McDonalds on Lyndale will be painted in Pride colors on Sept. 26th. Any interested RAC members should reach out to MaryKaye ASAP to sign up to paint. Originally 6:30-7am were considered for painting time; however, in discussing with Sherwin Williams, 10am or later is better for the paint to dry and sit for 24 hours if there is no rain in the forecast. After 24 hours, it is recommended that it be seal coated. RAC members present agreed that the circle should be painted in a rainbow in the colors of the Pride flag in order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple. This project is a collaboration between RAC, the City, and Spread Sunshine. Public Works is involved, too. Community Services Commission Update None. Friendship City Commission Liaison update Via email, Courtney reminded RAC members to sign up for time slots for Penn Fest that are still available. Exploring opportunities to collaborate with neighboring arts organizations Larry discussed how the Bloomington South Loop neighborhood has been adopting art into its public spaces. Though RAC is busy of late, keeping peripheral vision of opportunities to collaborate with other communities remains a consideration. 2021 Activities Little library was stocked by MaryKaye on 8/28. If anyone wants to take some of the books from the boxes in her office and restock the library as needed, please let her know. Poetry Recognition Event – Due to low RSVP’s for the event (4-6 yes, 3 maybe), RAC voted to cancel the Sept. 12th event at the bandshell. Karin will call the 9 potential attendees and inform them over the phone. An alternative may be explored at a later date at a smaller venue, or some other type of recognition, and finding a way to get the framed poems to the poets is being explored as well. Penn Fest – Sept. 19; Shifts are still available for RAC members to team up with Friendship City members at the following times: 11:30-1:30 (1); 1:30-3:30 (2). RAC will provide the art supplies/craft project/fans left over from prior events (butterflies). We will also have brochures on hand. Dogs Take the Stage – Sat. Oct. 16th at 5:30 pm at the Richfield Band Shell. This event is sponsored by RAC and WellHaven Pet Health. Applications are now available for community members to register their costumed dogs for the event http://www.richfieldmn.gov/onlineregistrationwww.richfieldmn.gov/onlineregistration (deadline Oct. 8). RAC members (Aric and Hazel) will MC the event. MaryKaye has printed flyers available to post around town. Trunk or Treat? We need to decide if we are registering for this event, also on 10/16 after the Dogs event. We could get a prime location next to the band shell in the overflow parking area. MaryKaye will ask RAC members if they are interested in participating once again via email, so RAC can sign up ASAP if interested. Staff Update Current budget is around $1100 – upcoming potential costs: more t-shirts/tank tops (navy blue, white and red logo), Pride circle paint, Candy and trunk or treat supplies, Dogs Take the Stage supplies (decorations), $25 to dry clean the RAC tablecloth which was water stained at the Crossroads event (rain drops). Announcements At the end of the meeting, present RAC members voted on new photography designs for new electrical boxes at the following locations: Woodlake Nature Center, Portland and 70th, Lyndale and 73rd. Photos that were selected featured: Woodlake with a reflection, fall leaves in a puddle, and a bee on a flower in a pollinator garden.
