Richfield Arts Commission Minutes April 2021 Richfield Arts Commission April 1, 2021 meeting minutes Call to order at 7:02 p.m. Approval of Agenda Mia motioned to approve agenda. Agenda approved. Approval of Minutes Janie Mork motioned to approve minutes. Minutes approved. Introductions and welcome new member - Aric Bieganek Aric Bieganek is new RAC member appointed by city council. Round of introductions for Eric and commission members. RAC Public Art Brochure Update Added a new map to the brochure with numbered flag to identify public art across the city of Richfield. Feedback requested as soon as possible. Final comments will be sent to designer Monday, April 5. Will be updating logo to align with most current version. on the color and reduce size of the flags. Should also align the color scheme between the flags and where poetry is located. Update flag 15 to be placed directly on Portland Avenue. Two new art installations expected in Richfield: Chase Bank public art installation and pocket park with art installation at Taft Park and Home Depot. Suggestion to add the diorama from Wood Lake Nature Center from Janie. Was decided not to add based on limited feedback from city staff. We could consider doing more advertising once the Nature Center is open. Community Services Commission Update – Lisa Rudolph Lisa Rudolph not in attendance. No update. Mississippi Valley Poets Poetry Project Suggested several locations in Richfield for poetry project: Adams Hill, Richfield Lake and Taft Park. Richfield Lake is preferred location. Cornerstone development property has also approved 2-3 posts to be included on its property. 8-15 poems on signs posted on poles purchased by Public Works. Mississippi Poets will pay for remaining costs of art installation. Poems will be selected from a poetry content currently in progress; deadline for submissions will be extended to May 1. Theme is nature. Need to visit city council in May 18 meeting to receive approval on the project. RAC will collect public feedback at an open house at the amphitheater April 21, 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Postcards will be mailed to surrounding neighbors prior to the event. Installation target completion: August 11 or 12 weather permitting. Could use amphitheater for event to showcase poetry when installation complete. Aric Bieganek motioned to approve the project. Approved by commission. Friendship City Commission Liaison Council member Mary Supple suggested that RAC have a liaison between the Friendship Commission and Arts Commission. Still need to determine whether a Friendship commission member sits on the Arts Commission or vis versa. Proposal from Larry to send an invitation to the Friendship Commission to attend RAC meetings on ongoing basis to partner on arts or friendship commission efforts. Mary Kaye to reach out to staff liaison of Friendship Commission to bring to April meeting. Exploring partnership opportunities with other arts organizations Joyce Marrie proposed that we reach out to other arts commissions to explore their activities and see what we can leverage and build relationships. Janie Mork agreed to put together a list to commissions to review as part of our April meeting. Equity and Inclusion Training/Commission Orientation - April 5, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Several commission members attended equity and inclusion training. Mixed feedback on content. Commission Orientation - April 5, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. – to review open meeting law and other aspects of commission participation. College of New Urbanism: Soliciting feedback on Portland Avenue project. Draft of Matching Grant Application Staff Liaison Mary Kaye Champa has created a Commission Call for Proposals application to formalize requests for matching grants on public arts projects in Richfield. Grant structure and available funding from the city of Richfield is to be determined. Request to review application form and send Mary Kaye Champa comments by end of next week.
