RAC June 2022 Meeting Minutes Richfield Arts Commission (RAC) Agenda June 2nd, 2022, 7 :00 PM to 8:30 PM Richfield Community Center 7000 Nicollet Call to Order – 7:00 pm Attendance: Present: Aric Bieganek, Hazel Bieganek, MaryKaye Champa, Janie Mork, Stephanie Jacobson, Larry Nelson, Joyce Marrie (via phone), Mary Supple Absent: Karin Wolverton, Brooke Nelson, Courtney Kupsch Approval of Agenda – Aric (1st), Stephanie (2nd), All in favor Approval of Minutes – Janie (1st), Larry (2nd), All in favor David Butler – from Friends of Richfield Bandshell, part of the bandshell planning/proposal and now is seeking to find creative ways to use the space for all types of musical genres. Would like to see an expanded schedule including potentially a Community Band concert series where Richfield hosts local several community bands from the Twin Cities area onstage on an alternative day (such as Sundays). He is also seeking to expand string programs at Richfield schools and in the community with an idea to start a Richfield Civic Orchestra. He is seeking partnership from RAC for some of these ideas. He was provided a list of RAC commissioners at the meeting and will be contacting RAC to discuss further soon. BJ Skoog- Galaxy mural and community celebration – There is a new mural being planned by Richfield Leadership Network (BJ Skoog) and Mixto (artist collective) on the Galaxy Foods International building at 7128 Chicago. Stephanie made a motion to partner with this project, providing RAC volunteers, helping to coordinate awareness/marketing, and helping make connections within the community. Larry seconded the motion, and all were in favor. The first kickoff event will be the Galaxy Block Party on Sat. June 25th from 10am-2pm with artists, food trucks and more. RAC will be tabling next to and helping assist the Imagination Station where residents can provide input on what they would like to see painted on the building with a goal of incorporating aspects of the diverse culture/heritage of all residents in the area. Stephanie and Aric agreed to volunteer at the event, but please let Aric, Stephanie, MaryKaye, Larry and Karin know if you will be attending this event, as we’ll need several RAC volunteers to make it successful. Also, flyers are available now for the event with the RAC logo included, so please pick them up from the community center if you have places to display them. Chase Bank Sculpture – no updates CrossRoads Juneteenth event June 11th - cancelled Paint Chipping on Pride roundabout – bits and pieces are falling off – blue paint most damaged; Discussion was had on how/when to fix it, along with costs. The paint is ~$125/gallon. Arts Commission must purchase supplies to maintain and perform manual labor. Motion to purchase blue paint and supplies up to $300 (Aric 1st, Larry 2nd). All in favor. Little Library – Larry restocked a couple of times. MaryKaye has 3 boxes in community center, Aric has 1 box at home. Will continue to monitor. Senior Showcase for High School students – recap – It was a successful event with about 70 people in attendance including families, friends, teachers, RAC members. Spent $48.92 on food for the reception. Great community connection – seeking to partner with the RHS Art Teachers again next year. Community Services Commission Update – Brooke Nelson – no updates (absent) Friendship City Commission Liaison – Courtney Kupsch - no updates (absent) Trunk or Treat October 15 – Dogs Take The Stage – brochure copy is due June 13th. Same timeframe – 5:30-7:30pm. MaryKaye will reach out to see if Wellhaven wants to sponsor the event again. Updates/Info Teen Art Show – Library – staff changes/alternative hours disrupted the collaboration – Larry may stop in to inquire about it. Shakespeare in the park -Cromulent Shakespeare (no longer operating) Fireside Poets/ Cracked Walnut – Janie will make a frame border for the bulletin board for one of our IKEA frames in storage so the Fireside Poets can place poems for display to the community. 2022 Activities- Art in the Park, June 18, July 16 – Purchases were made at Michael’s Dollar Tree - ~ $64. For the July 16 event, we will need egg cartons, so please save and bring to the community center to MaryKaye or bring to the event on July 18th. Please email Aric if you plan to volunteer at the 6/18 Jazzy Art in the Park event and Stephanie if you plan to volunteer at the 7/16 Seed Art in the Park event so we can get an accurate count of volunteers. We also need lentils, spilt peas and popcorn kernels to finalize supplies. Aric picked up most of the supplies from the community center for the 6/18 event, but MaryKaye will bring a bag or two of seeds, staplers, hole punchers, RAC stickers, and brochures to the event. CrossRoads Panorama event-August 20th – 3rd annual event. Joyce will research with the ice arena staff when we can arrive to help set up the event, and when we need to leave the stage. Targeted timeframe is 2-6. PennFest/ Poetry Event -September- see previous minutes for details Electrical Box Wrap updates. – no updates. </w:t> Staff Update – The City discussed commission/RAC events and asked the commission to mindful of RAC being open to hosting new groups/orgs./artists as part of the event agenda. Co-sponsored events are subject to charges for the partnering organizations. RAC-only events may not have some charges in designated public spaces. RAC shirts and supplies for upcoming events will be available for pickup by RAC members in the community center. Announcements - none
