Richfield Arts Commission April 2023 Minutes Richfield Arts Commission (RAC) Agenda April 6th, 2023, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Richfield Community Center 7000 Nicollet Call to Order – 7:04 Present: Stephanie Kopp, Stephanie Jacobson, Janie Mork, Larry Nelson, Sharon Christensen, Aric Bieganek, Joyce, Karl Huemiller, BJ Skoog Approval of Agenda Stephanie J. – motion; Janie – second; All in favor Approval of Minutes Janie – motion; Stephanie K. – second; All in favor Earth Day Activity-April 23rd Aric and Larry are available to volunteer, and maybe Janie Art project: natural materials collected from Wood Lake – can leave in a rectangular area on the ground. Will bring glue, paper, and markers in case of weather. Motion – Aric; Larry – 2nd; All in Favor Art Show for High School Seniors- May Event: May 5th 7-9pm in Community Center, Gallery will host their work through June Potential advertising avenues were discussed RAC will provide lemonade and cookies and greet guests Motion – Larry; Janie – 2nd; All in Favor RAC Farmers Market Events June 10th: Decorate Your Bike theme – Aric will lead this event. Idea is to create tassle handlebars with streamers, etc. Playing cards, Mirrored paper reflectors, Beads (spokes) were brainstormed project ideas. July 15: No theme yet Aug. 12: Farmer’s Market Week – there will be music and a book reading happening on this day. Could coordinate project with these activities in mind. Little Library The door is damaged – City will assess and see if it can be fixed. Books are stocked. Pride Roundabout- Chipping Paint Yellow paint is chipping, maintenance was brought up and whether we should consider maintenance responsibilities more when voting for bigger projects. RAC will aim this summer to purchase one color and repaint that color later in the summer. Community Services Commission Update, BJ Skoog (new liaison) Skate Park expansion – there will be a public forum in April; Bike Park planning; Playground improvements; Local sales tax; Need for seasonal hires for Park and Rec (16+, 8-4 M-Th is high need time – Rec Attendant positions); Red White and Blue Days – seeking more info from the non-profit who runs the event. CrossRoads Panorama event-1st weekend in September Event: Sept. 16th 1-6 pm – RAC volunteers requested Will be a bigger event this year with more musicians, volunteers Mural Celebration August 18th Event: Aug. 19th 6-8:30pm – will be similar to Galaxy Block Party with food trucks, interactive activities, etc. May be some more augmented reality and QR code opportunities to get more community input on continuing to turn the parking lot in front of the mural into a community-friendly space. RAC’s presence was requested. More will be discussed in future meetings. PennFest- September 17th No new info this month. Bike Park Event -September ? No new info this month other than updates from CSC Liaison Dogs Take the Stage -at dog park instead-October Oct 14 is targeted date. Details TBD. BJ has connections at Woof Central on Penn Ave and City Paws for potential sponsors. More features are coming to the dog park – event could raise awareness. Author Event- Late Fall Some local authors have been reaching out to the City to collaborate on events. Electrical Box Wraps Photo contest wraps up this month, 1 box will be voted on by RAC Art Displays- community center, city hall No updates yet – Displays are set through June/July – seeking artists for the remainder of the year. Staff Update Videos of Commissioner and Chair Trainings are posted on the Richfield website – those who missed the trainings are encouraged to watch them. Karl created a calendar for RAC members to view/track events for the year and provided paper copies in the meeting. Announcements Earth Day Cleanup – Commissioners are invited to participate – Apr. 20th 11-1, Veteran’s Park Pavilion Juneteenth Event – possibly June 17 at the bandshell 11:30-4, being planned by Human Rights Commission and other community members. RAC could consider participating, leading poetry activities with community. Crossroads Panorama has a children’s story time theatre event – 4/16 at 3pm 4/22 9-Noon, VEEP/RHS food shelf citywide food drive is happening.
