• MK suggested raffling off some art books at a future
event that were donated to the Arts Commission that
we are not using.
• MK asked if we are interested in selling concessions at
Concerts in the Park series this year. We decided not
to. We normally raise $80-$100 on average for the
Concerts In The Park season. All we have left for
concession stock is some freeze pops.
• Mary and Cheryl from the Farmers Market want to
know specifically what our activities will be at each
open house. Debra said she will talk to Mary and then
email MK about it.
• Public Art Tour event is shelved for now due to timing.
Members set a goal to do this for Spring 2013, and it
will be included in the presentation to city council in
July.
Debra will talk to
Mary about the
request to know
future open
house activities
and will email
MK.

looking for an artist to display for August. If you know anyone,
let him know.

The Art Center/May
Open House
Debra
Caserotti
• The Art Center was cleaned up and an inventory has
been created for items we have and a list of items that
we still need for the Art Center was compiled. Many
have already been purchased.
• The new floor has been installed in the Art Center and
it really brightens up the room.
• The May open house went well. The flower pot
decorating activity (which included a free plant from a
Farmers Market vendor) was very popular; 87 kids
came through the Art Center and we got lots of
compliments.
Edina Art Board Debra
Caserotti
Debra and Judy attended an Edina Art Board meeting to see
how they run their group and run the Edina Art Center. The
Edina Art Board is a much larger group and they have: a joint
work session with their city council that lasts an hour and 15
minutes, sub committees within the art board, 978 members
and 300+ FB friends, business cards for networking, an intern
for the Art Center and sponsoring businesses. Obviously, we’re
not comparable to the Edina Art Board in numbers or
resources; however, we can use elements from them, including
submitting a Arts Commission plan covering the next few years
to the City Council. (Attached to the minutes are Debra and
Judy’s notes compiled from the Edina Art Board meeting and
handed out at this RAC meeting.)
Create a yearly
work plan to
submit to the City
Council that we
can present at
the July 10th work
session. We’ll
finalize this next
meeting. Judy is
putting together a
PowerPoint.

Denyse Pahl Jones will be displaying Native American
Apparels in July. Cisco Rameriz will be displaying Hispanic art
in August, and Deenise Lacy will display ethnic art in
September.
Teen Art Show Kevin Klos Kevin got in contact with the Augsburg Park Librarian Lisa
Howes about the 2012 Teen Art Show. The Teen Art show
opening will be on Monday November 19th. The library will start
accepting art somewhere in the beginning of November. Lisa
asked Kevin if the Optimists will be donating prize money this
year. After group discussion, we decided that it would mean
more, and be more effective if Lisa gets in direct contact with
the Optimists. Kevin will forward along the contact info to Lisa.
Kevin to forward
Optimist contacts
to Lisa Howes.
Adjourn The meeting was adjourned at 9:07 PM.
Edina Art Board Report
What We Learned
1. Agenda- EAB uses same basic format for agenda. The agenda is sent out
1-1/2 weeks in advance, along with the previous meeting’s minutes. This
way if there are any changes they can be made before the meeting and
everyone knows what will be discussed and are prepared to bring ideas,
questions etc. to the table.
2. EAB had a Joint Work Session with the Edina City Council and Art Center
Board on May 15th. They were given 1 hour and 15 minutes. Discussed were
the past plans, future plans and proposals. EAB also submits a yearly plan to
the council for the next year usually by September or October. The Art
Center Board complained about lack of direction from City Council and poor
communication.
3. All members of EAB had a duty or project on the Art Board. There are
also Working Groups. They have an Arts & Culture Working Group; someone
who works on the film festival; membership and the members' juried show.
(Through the Art Center) Each working group made a very brief report on
what is going on and future plans. Each report was submitted in writing to
the chair. They make this working group structure legal by following the
open meeting law, which was revised in 2010 by the Minnesota Legislature.
The working groups can meet separately from the Art Center Board, as long
as they post their meeting with the legally required 10 days notice and
hold them in a public venue. They also work with connections which can be
another city entity or the citizens of Edina or contacts with schools &
businesses, etc.
4. The Edina Art Center has 978 members and 300+ Facebook Friends.
(Membership information from their website shown below.) The Membership
Working Group chair distributed business cards to board members with
contact information. The board members can use these cards in recruiting
new board members. They stay in contact with the interested parties
throughout the year, so that when the applications are due to the city
council, interest has not been lost.
5. EAB has the same issue with term limits that we do; in fact, the Board
Chair will need to step down in the middle of many activities already
planned. They want to request to the city council that the EAB should have
some exceptions to the term limits, because this Board is not as contentious
as other Boards for the City of Edina. They also wanted to correct perceived
problems with the way the Edina City Council recruits board members. The
Art Center board would like to have a detailed job description that describes
the expected time commitment given to prospective members before they
are interviewed. They would also like to see an orientation given to new
members.
6. The Edina Art Center is hiring an intern.
7. Edina Art Center events have sponsoring businesses. The upcoming
Film Festival has 78 sponsors. Members have requested that a summary
sheet of benefits of being a sponsor be developed so they can easily recruit
more sponsors.
What We Could Use
1. Agendas should be sent out 1-2 weeks in advance. Minutes should be
available within a week of past meeting. This way everyone is up to date,
including absent members and those that need to report on something have
time to prepare. Also, both need to be posted on the city website. Right now
the website appears like we are not functional or doing anything.
2. RAC has a work session with Richfield City Council on July 10th for 3
minutes. We may need to request a longer one-on-one session to present
some short range and long range goals, plans & activities. Right now, we are
___________(fill in the blank) to the City of Richfield and the city council.
We also should submit the next years plan to the city council, this way we
can show we mean business and maybe they can be inspired to be more
involved!!
3. It was suggested by EAB that recruitment needs to be handled more
diligently. We need to actively recruit, stay in contact with those that are
interested and if needed, put the application in the hands of recruits and
future members. Also, RAC needs to advise the city council of questions to
ask of prospective members and some general qualities to look for. We
should have some input in this. The business cards can also be used.
4. When we are short handed, enlist family members, friends, neighbors
whoever you can to help in activities. Also, think about your co-workers,
businesses & business owners, church members, school contacts to develop
a network of contacts, just like you would in a job search. NETWORK,
NETWORK, NETWORK!! Everyone who knows you should know you are a
member of the Richfield Arts Commission.
5. Develop Working Groups that have active duties. Post any meetings of
those groups with the 10 day notification. Working groups would update all
members at the general meeting.
6. Finally, I asked how they would handle a large donation, like the $1000
donation we never received from a Richfield business owner. It can be
accepted by the chairs or the Art Center Director, who serves as city liaison,
then presented to the city council for approval. We may have lost that
donation because there was no procedure to be followed.
