City Council Meeting 12/9/2025
Agenda Section: Item Discussion
Agenda Item: 2.a.
Report Prepared By:
Scott Kulzer, Senior Analyst
Department Director:
Kristin Asher, Public Works Director
Item for Consideration:
Discuss Proposed Public Works Storage Site at Diagonal Boulevard and Cedar
Avenue South.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
• At present, Public Works utilizes space at Taft Lake, the MnDOT Facility and the
Public Works Maintenance Facility for temporary storage of tree trunks, water
mainbreak material, streetlights, bulky items, salt, and other miscellaneous
materials.
• Public Works staff must vacate the temporary storage area located near the
southeast corner of Taft Lake in the near future.
• MnDOT has indicated their intent to terminate the existing salt storage
arrangement they have with Public Works at the Cedar Avenue MnDOT facility,
which will necessitate a new salt storage solution.
• Public Works does not have enough storage capacity at the Maintenance Facility
to absorb the loss of the Taft Lake site or the arrangement with MnDOT.
• The City recently acquired a parcel of land near Diagonal Boulevard and Cedar
Avenue South from MnDOT at no cost to the City with the intent of constructing a
new Public Works Storage Site.
• Public Works staff have worked with a consultant to develop preliminary design
plans for the storage site and are seeking feedback from City Council regarding
the proposal.
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Review and discuss the proposed Public Works storage site at Diagonal
Boulevard and Cedar Avenue South. Staff is seeking direction to move forward
with the proposed storage site plan.
