City Engineer Michael Eastling gave a brief commentary on the past programs
and accomplishments carried out by the Energy Awareness Commission. These included
the low pressure lighting program, the infrared scanning program, the "Park and
Ride" program, the "Ride Share" program, the mini and maxi audits and the distribution
of conservation information.
Cam~nission member Doty indicated that there is going to be a solar demonstration
project at the Wood Lake Nature Center.
Various members discussed the solid waste disposal system and the potential
use of this to create energy. The city manager reiterated some of the efforts
that Hennepin County had gone through in determining the potential of generating
energy from the burning of refuse.
The council and the commission also discussed the possible use of cable
television for the purpose of distributing energy conservation information. The
city manager indicated that part of the five percent franchise fee could be used
for this purpose.
There was also a discussion on the problems with door-to-door energy sales
persons taking advantage of residents.
The city manager indicated he thought it would be appropriate for the
Energy Awareness Commission to review the various planning and building codes
for energy conservation ramifications.
