1973-4972rR~SOI,ITTION NO. 4972 RESOLI7TION OPPOSING REGISTRATION OF VOTERS ON ELECTION I~AY WHERI<AS, the legislature of the State of Minnesota has institured a 20~day period before election during which registration for that election cannot take place, ar~d WHEREAS, that tune period has worked to the advantage of local goveY°nur~ent and citizens in maintaining a fair and reasonable system of voters registration9 and WHEREAS, permitting the registration of voters on election day would do aw~~y with preelection registration, and WI-IEF~AS, lack of tune to check accu~°acy of registrati®ri would make possible the practice of double voting since challenge would become meaningless 9 and WHEREAS, such revision would work to the disadvantage of previously registered citizens by increasing the tune they would have to spend at the polls, and WHEREAS, polling places would have to be enlarged and additional staff hired, thereby increasing the cost of electi®ns, and WHEREASa such increasing costs would force many municipalities tc~ exceed levy limits imposed upon them by law. NOW, THEREFORE, PE IT RESOLVED: 1 .
