RESOLUTION RELATING TO THE 1972
AMENDMENTS TO THE FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT
WHEREAS the United States Congress is considering the enactment of certain
amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act and,
WHEREAS certain of these amendments would extend coverage of the Fair Labor
Standards Act to municipal employees and,
WHEREAS the Fair Labor Standards amendments of 1972 provide that the standard
work week be reduced to 40 hours over the next five years and all hours worked in excess
of 40 be paid time and one-half overtime and,
WHEREAS the reduction in the standard work week to forty hours for firefighters
would result in substantial increases in the cost of fire protection for the City of
Richfield with a corresponding increase in the property tax and,
WHERF;AS the Fair Labor Standards amendments of 1972 would remove from the. -
local level of government the authority to establish pay practices for its employees,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council goes on record in adamant
oppositian,.to including municipal employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act and
urges the Minnesota Congressional delegation to support all efforts to exclude municipal
employees from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Passed by the City Council of the City of Richfield, Minnesota this 28th day of
August, 1972.
