1968-4078r~~.~ RESOLUTION NO. 4078 RESOLUTION RELATING TO PROBATIONARY PERIOD F®R POLICE OFFICERS WHEREAS, the complexity of the duties perfornbed by a police officer are increasing, and WHEREAS, the current probation period for police officers employed by the City of Richfield is six months in accordance with Minnesota SCcatute 419.07, and WHEREAS, much of the first six months spent on the Richfield Police Degart~ ment by a police officer is devoted to formal and on®the fob t~°aining, and WHEREAS, it is difficult for a police supervisor to assess the performance of a new police officer until he is allowed to exercise independent judgment, and WHEREAS, the city manager and police chief have recommended a longer prob- ation period for new police officers, and WHEREAS, the Richfield Police Officer's Federation and the Richfield Police Civil Service Commission have endorsed the concept of a longer probation period for new police officers, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: 1. That the city council of the City of Richfield does hereby favor extending the probation period for new police officers from six months to one year. 2. That the city manager be directed to meet with the state legislators from Richfield to arrange for sponsorship of legislation to permit extensi®n of the probation period for ppl3,ce officers employed by the City of Richfield from six months to one year. 3. That copies of this resolution and the endorsing letters from the Civil Service Commission and Federation be distributed to the members of the appropriate legislative committees.
