Proclamation of the City of Richfield WHEREAS, the city has strived to create safer, more convenient and enjoyable places to drive, walk and bicycle in the City of Richfield; and WHEREAS, research has demonstrated that roundabouts are a more effective tool in helping to minimize injuries and fatalities resulting from crashes compared to traffic signal and stop sign-regulated intersections; and WHEREAS, roundabouts slow driving speeds, reduce traffic conflict points and allow for easier decision making by pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists; and WHEREAS, roundabouts have become an integral part of the City of Richfield’s transportation infrastructure; and WHEREAS, the City of Richfield built its first roundabout in 2007 at Richfield Parkway and 66th Street as part of the Cedar Point Commons redevelopment; and WHEREAS, the city’s second roundabout transformed the Portland Avenue and 66th Street intersection from one of the county’s most dangerous intersections into one of the county’s safest intersections; and WHEREAS, in 2018, Richfield saw two new roundabouts added along 66th Street at its intersection with Lyndale and Nicollet Avenues, which will lead to increased pedestrian safety and allow vehicular and bicycle traffic to flow more freely; and WHEREAS, with the completion of the Lyndale Avenue Reconstruction project in late 2019, three more roundabouts will be added to the city’s transportation network; and WHEREAS, during the month of September 2019, the City of Richfield’s Administrative Services, Public Safety and Public Works Departments will be partnering to offer a wide variety of educational opportunities to raise awareness and promote user safety at the city’s roundabouts. NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARIA REGAN GONZALEZ, Mayor of the City of Richfield, on behalf of the Richfield City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2019, as: ROUNDABOUT EDUCATION, AWARENESS AND SAFETY MONTH IN THE CITY OF RICHFIELD And call on the people of Richfield to observe this month by working with staff, neighbors, friends and family to promote the proper use and proclaim the many benefits of the city’s roundabouts.
