RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CONSTRUCTION
OF LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT ALONG
I35W RIGHT-OF-WAY
WHEREAS, the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority is developing a
plan for the construction of a light rail transit system within Hennepin
County, and
WHEREAS, the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority has established
a Corridor Advisory Committee to recommend an appropriate alignment for light
rail transit within the South Corridor, and
WHEREAS, the South Corridor includes the Richfield area, and
WHEREAS, the City of Richfield has been significantly impacted by the
construction and expansion of regional transportation systems including I35W,
Crosstown Highway, I494, and Trunk Highway 77, and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of Richfield for a light rail
transit system to be constructed which will meet the transportation objective
of moving as many people as possible quickly, conveniently, and economically
- through our community, and
WHEREAS, the major transportation objective appears to be better met
using the I35W right-of-way, and
WHEREAS, installation of a light rail transit system on the Soo Line
would have significant negative impacts upon City schools, parks and
neighborhoods, and
WHEREAS, the South Corridor Advisory Committee analyzed and recommended
the I35W right-of-way as the preferred alignment, with the Soo Line a second
choice.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the City
of Richfield as follows:
1. The City of Richfield supports the recommendation of the Corridor
Advisory. Committee that the I35W right-of-way is the preferred
alignment for light rail transit through Richfield.
2. That additional study of the South Corridor alignment alternative
include an analysis of the overall transportation impact,
expandability and community impact of each alternative.
