07-07-2015Richfield Human Rights Commission Monthly Meeting Minutes July 7, 2015 Members Present: Debbie Eng Mark Westergaard Todd Chase Shrestha Swopnil (student representative) Kirsten Klosinski Sara Gumke Mike Kuehn Katie Eagle Judith Dominguez (student representative) Chara Blanch Also present: Mike Howard-City Council Liaison Absent: Emilia Gonzales Avalos Jeff Wright 1. Meeting called to order by Chair Mark Westergaard at 6:31PM. 2. Approval of Agenda a.) Kristin moved; Debbie seconded; Unanimously approved 3. Approval of Minutes (from May) i. Debbie moved; Judith seconded; Unanimously approved. 4. Reports a.) Chair’s report: Mark reported that there was good turnout for the city council ceremony and reception honoring the most recent Jacobsen Outstanding Citizen award winner, Russ King. b.) Treasurer’s report: Mark reported in Jeff’s absence that there is $134.02 in our account. 5. Unfinished Business a.) Debbie suggested that we need to move forward on giving our report regarding Jan- uary’s community conversation event to the city council. We will go ahead and present it in it’s current form. An addendum can be added later if there are still unresolved issues. Todd moved; Sara seconded; Unanimously approved. b.) Landlord/Tenant Rights Workshop: There has been no movement yet on the planning for this upcoming event. The workshop will probably be held in October or November of this year. Assumption Church was brought up a potential location to hold the workshop, maybe after a church service. A subcommittee was formed to the start planning process. c.) In preparation for the upcoming landlord/tenant workshop, the commission will invite a specialist on the Richfield housing situation to speak at our next meeting. 6. New Business: a.) Mark mentioned that he has been in communication with an organization about having a holocaust survivor/s speak at an event in Richfield, maybe in the spring of 2016. b.) Penn Fest: the RHRC will again have a presence at Penn Fest this year, September 20. Debbie suggested that we have some activities to engage visitors to our table. c.) Mark reported that a representative from the Center for Victims of Torture will speak at an upcoming commission meeting. d.) Mark suggested we make some changes to some of the content of city web page. We will brainstorm changes and possible updates at our next meeting. 7. Next meeting: August 4, 2015, 6:30PM (This meeting was cancelled due to lack of a quorum. the next meeting will be held on September 1, 2015, 6:30PM). 8.
