Minutes 12-06-11 Richfield Human Rights Commission Minutes December 6, 2011 6:30pm – 7:45pm Richfield City Hall I. Attendance a. Elizabeth (Morrissey) Wendt b. Julie Bagby c. Todd Sndell d. Todd Chase e. Lall Ram f. Molly Darsow g. Phillip Lower h. Nancy Roberts i. Sana Juma II. Reports a. Nancy Roberts gave her report on the Yellow Ribbon b. Treasurer: Nancy Reported that the account contains $511.96 III. Old Business a. Legal Advice Workshop i. Nancy Roberts will make copies of the handouts provided by Elizabeth. Elizabeth needs to email her pdf versions of the handouts. ii. VLN will be getting volunteer attorneys and translators. VLN will also provide legal pads and pens. iii. RHRC will provide food for volunteers, the venue, tables and chairs. iv. Food: 1. All guests will be provided bottled water and a healthy snack such as fruit and a granola bar. 2. Volunteers will be provided with dinner like Chipotle, Jimmy Johns, or the like. 3. Liz will ask Target for healthy snack donations 4. Molly will ask Lunds for healthy snack donations and Davani’s and Jimmy Johns for dinner meals 5. Lall will ask Chipotle for dinner donations and Cub foods for healthy snack donations v. Flyer 1. Todd will make changes to the flyer based on last month’s minutes and off of the sample drafted at the meeting, including a. Adding text on the four corners of the document as follows i. Know you legal rights ii. Free legal advice iii. \[speak Spanish\] iv. Speak Somali\] b. Add a brief description of the event c. At the bottom say “Everyone Welcome” d. Increase the size of the text all over e. Biggest text should be the four corners, then everyone welcome, then the title of the event, then the date/time/place, then the description paragraph. 2. Languages: Molly will look into getting the flier in spanish 3. Publicity: a. By December 20, all members will be sent a copy of the flyer. Members will keep flyers on them at all times to post in public places and pass out at community events/meetings. b. For example, at the RCC meeting on the 20th of December, Elizabeth will discuss the event and pass out fliers. c. The fliers will be posted on Listserves (VLN’s? RCC’s? etc.), at VLN’s office, at Legal Aid’s office, and at the government center near the housing court area. d. Molly will take care of New Paper postings and other like media. vi. Nametags: Julie will look into getting 14 permenant name tags where the name can be replaced. We are looking for official/fancier nametags. These will be good for community events when members are attempting to reach out to the community. vii. Signs the day of the legal workshop: Ask Linda about dry-erase boards to post in order to guide people. viii. RCC meeting: Elizabeth will tell everyone to attend the legal workshop in order to network, create new connections, and be available to community members if need be. There will not be tables to set up for each group, but each group is encourage to have a member represent the group at the workshop. ix. Printing: Todd will check in on color copies for the flyer at Kinko’s. b. Community brochure i. Todd will make changes discussed at the meeting, including: 1. Replacing “legal aid workshops” to “legal workshop and advice clinics.” 2. The “what we do” section will be reduced to one line and bulleted 3. A new page will be created to put the award info on with an accompanied photo, art or neat border/design 4. Take out “bias crimes are based on fear…” and pull the rest of the text of that page down. ii. Printing 1. Todd will ask Kinko’s about discounts for non-profits.
