RESOLUTION NO. 8683
RESOLUTION URGING THE PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION TO RETAIN THE 612
AREA CODE IN THE MINNEAPOLIS/RICHFIELD/FORT SNELLING AREA, WHILE
SPLITTING THE REMAINING 612 AREA INTO TWO NEW AREA CODES.
WHEREAS, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission has proposed that the
cities of Richfield and Minneapolis are to receive a new area code; and
WHEREAS, central cities have traditionally been allowed to keep their own area
code; and
WHEREAS, in the event another split of the new suburban area code is needed,
the Commission will have to decide anew whether one group of suburbs or another
should keep the 612 area code, a dilemma that can be avoided by retaining the 612
area code for Minneapolis/Richfield/Fort Snelling
WHEREAS, Minneapolis is the seat of Hennepin County; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Richfield have clearly spoken in favor of Richfield
retaining the 612 area code; and
WHEREAS, 612 is associated and minds of people around the nation and the
world, having been the primary center of the 612 area code for as long as people have
used area codes; and
WHEREAS, it is within the entire Twin Cities Metropolitan Area's best interest to
keep the 612 area code associated with the core city of Minneapolis.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of
Richfield, Minnesota, as follows:
1. That the City of Richfield requests the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission
